Johnny Mattsson sculpture

This sculptural object was designed and produced by Johnny Mattsson in Sweden during the 1950s. Carved from teak and mounted on a rosewood base, the piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design’s focus on organic form and fine craftsmanship. The design features two stylized, abstract figures intertwined vertically. Each fish is characterized by a tapering triangular head and a minimalist body, with a hollowed negative space between them that evokes motion and unity through abstraction. Small circular perforations serve as eyes, adding subtle animation to the otherwise reductive forms.

The warm tones of the teak contrast with the denser grain and darker coloration of the rosewood base, emphasizing the natural qualities of both woods. The matte finish enhances the texture and grain patterns without adding excessive sheen. The sculpture is signed and numbered on the underside of the base, indicating it belongs to a limited edition produced by the artist.

Johnny Mattsson was a Swedish designer and craftsman active in the mid-20th century, known for his small-scale wooden objects and sculptural pieces. His work follows the Scandinavian tradition of elevating wood as a primary material, emphasizing hand shaping, clarity of form, and tactile presence.
