Biography
Born in Småland, Sweden, in 1914, Nils Jonsson reportedly began his career as an apprentice in a furniture factory at the age of fourteen. During the 1940s, he established his own furniture workshop in Tranås, where he developed an approach to furniture design emphasizing craftsmanship, organic forms and practical functionality. His work reflected the broader developments in Scandinavian design, combining traditional cabinetmaking with the increasingly refined and minimalist aesthetics of the post-war period.
Jonsson became particularly associated with Hugo Troeds, a furniture manufacturer established in Bjärnum, Sweden, in 1934 by Hugo and Svea Troedsson. The company became known for its high-quality modern furniture, collaborating with designers including Jonsson and Yngve Ekström. Jonsson's work for Troeds included sideboards, cabinets, tables and seating, often produced in teak and other carefully selected woods. His designs were distinguished by their restrained appearance, precise construction and attention to the natural characteristics of the materials.
Among his most recognizable designs are the Arild and Trento sideboards, both produced by Troeds. These pieces feature elongated rectangular forms, sliding cabinet doors, integrated drawers and slender, tapered legs. Their carefully balanced proportions and functional storage arrangements exemplify the understated elegance of Swedish mid-century furniture. Jonsson also designed the Garmi chair and contributed to modular storage collections such as Domi Monté, demonstrating his versatility across different types of domestic furniture.
