Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen

Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen (1930–2009) was a Danish furniture designer, architect, cabinetmaker, and educator associated with postwar Scandinavian design. His work reflects a practical and human-centred approach to furniture, combining cabinetmaking knowledge with architectural clarity and functional simplicity. He is particularly known for the OGK daybed, the Saw Chair, and the Moduline collection, designed in collaboration with Torben Lind.

Biography

Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen trained as a cabinetmaker before continuing his studies in furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. He later studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, giving him a broad foundation in craftsmanship, furniture construction, and spatial design.

After completing his studies, Gjerløv-Knudsen worked with several Danish architects and designers, including Ludvig Pontoppidan, Kay Kørbing, and Vilhelm Lauritzen’s research department. These early experiences placed him within the wider Danish modern tradition, where function, proportion, material understanding, and careful detailing were central principles.

In 1962, he began collaborating with the architect Torben Lind. Together they developed the Moduline collection, a flexible furniture system that reflected the period’s interest in modularity, adaptability, and rational production. Their work combined clear construction with a practical approach to everyday use, making it suitable for both domestic and public interiors.

Gjerløv-Knudsen is also known for the OGK daybed, originally designed in 1962 for his son to use at a school camp. The design is simple, portable, and functional, consisting of a wooden frame and canvas construction that can be assembled without screws or tools. Its direct and honest construction has made it one of his most recognized works.
