Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen armchairs
This exceptionally rare pair of armchairs was designed by Danish architect and designer Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and crafted by cabinetmaker C. B. Hansen in Denmark in 1961. Only four examples of this model are known to exist, making them an important piece of Scandinavian mid-century furniture history and a testament to the era’s emphasis on craftsmanship, proportion, and material quality.
The armchairs feature a sculptural frame in solid rosewood, characterized by elegantly curved armrests and precise joinery that highlight the cabinetmaker’s high level of skill. The organic silhouette of the back and arms reflects Gjerløv-Knudsen’s modernist approach, balancing functional simplicity with graceful form. The seat is made from original woven cane, a traditional material that not only adds tactile contrast but also demonstrates the designer’s interest in combining natural materials with refined woodworking.
Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen (1930–2009) was known for his innovative contributions to Danish modern furniture, often exploring structural lightness and clarity of form while maintaining a strong sense of craftsmanship. C. B. Hansen, one of Denmark’s esteemed cabinetmakers, produced furniture for some of the most significant designers of the period, ensuring that each piece met the highest artisanal standards.
The condition of the chairs is excellent, with minor signs of age and use consistent with their vintage. Their rarity, historical importance, and refined aesthetic make them highly sought-after examples of Scandinavian modern design.
