Roland Wilhelmsson

Roland Wilhelmsson (1928–2017) was a Swedish furniture designer known for his robust wooden furniture and his clear, material-focused approach to design. He is particularly associated with solid pine furniture, where simple geometric forms, visible construction, and careful joinery create a strong and direct expression. His work belongs to the postwar development of Swedish furniture design and reflects a balance between functional simplicity, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for natural materials.

Biography

Roland Wilhelmsson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, later known as Konstfack. His education gave him a foundation in form, materials, and construction, which became central to his work as a furniture designer. He later worked with several Swedish manufacturers, including Nordiska Kompaniet and Karl Andersson & Söner.

Wilhelmsson is best known for furniture in solid pine, a material he used with a strong sense of structure and weight. Rather than hiding the character of the wood, his designs often emphasize its grain, knots, thickness, and construction details. This gave his furniture a tactile and grounded quality, with forms that feel both minimal and expressive.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Wilhelmsson designed tables, benches, and seating furniture that reflected the growing interest in natural materials and honest construction. His work often features clear silhouettes, substantial proportions, and visible joinery, placing emphasis on the relationship between material, function, and craftsmanship. Designs such as his Ågesta dining table and Bamse bench show his ability to create furniture with both practical strength and a distinctive visual presence.
