Roland Wilhelmsson bench
This rare side table or bench, model Bamse, was designed by Roland Wilhelmsson and produced by Karl Andersson & Söner AB in Sweden during the 1970s. The piece is executed in solid pine and showcases the architectonic clarity and robust minimalism characteristic of Wilhelmsson’s work. Its construction is defined by two solid plank supports and a thick, rectangular top joined with circular dowel inlays, emphasizing craftsmanship and material honesty.
The natural grain and warm tone of the pine are accentuated by a matte surface that reflects light softly while preserving the wood’s tactile quality. The visible joints and knots reveal the structural logic of the design, aligning with the Scandinavian approach to truth in materials. The proportions are balanced and monumental, giving the piece a sculptural presence despite its simplicity.
Roland Wilhelmsson (1928–2017) was a Swedish architect and designer associated with a rational and functionalist tradition that embraced solid wood construction. His Bamse series is among his most recognized designs, characterized by durable forms that reflect both architectural precision and a deep respect for natural materials. Karl Andersson & Söner, founded in 1898, has long been known for its commitment to traditional joinery and sustainable production methods, aligning perfectly with Wilhelmsson’s ethos.
The bench remains in good vintage condition with an appealing patina and signs of use consistent with age. The surface exhibits minor marks and variations that enhance its authenticity and material depth.
