Illum Wikkelsø coffee table

Information

This very rare coffee table, model Genius, was designed by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced by CFC Silkeborg in Denmark during the 1960s. Wikkelsø is recognized for his sculptural approach to modernist furniture, emphasizing form and construction as essential aesthetic components. The Genius model exemplifies this philosophy through its expressive and meticulously crafted base paired with material clarity.

The table’s base is constructed from solid rosewood, featuring a geometric X-shaped design composed of rounded and chamfered elements. The joinery is precise and subtly sculptural, with softly tapered connections that balance structural strength and visual openness. The tabletop is made of thick, original round glass, which allows the base to remain fully visible, making it the focal point of the piece. Brass fittings secure the glass to the wooden frame at six discreet mounting points, adding a refined detail.

The rosewood displays a pronounced linear grain with rich tonal contrasts, ranging from warm browns to deeper, near-black streaks, typical of high-quality Brazilian rosewood used in the period. The glass surface shows minor wear consistent with age, including a small nick.

The table is in good vintage condition, with all original materials preserved. It measures 106 centimeters (41.7 inches) in diameter and 43.5 centimeters (17.1 inches) in height, combining sculptural elegance with functional design in a distinctive example of Danish mid-century modern furniture.
