Arne Vodder armchair
This rare armchair, model FD184/L, was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark in 1956. Constructed from solid teak with original black leather upholstery, the chair features brass hardware that allows for the characteristic suspended backrest. It is a refined synthesis of sculptural form and modern Danish craftsmanship, exemplifying Vodder’s mid-century design approach.
The chair’s structure is defined by soft, flowing lines and carefully joined components. The teak frame has a warm reddish-brown tone, finished with a smooth, oiled surface that accentuates the natural grain variation. The seat and backrest are upholstered in black leather, with the two elements appearing to float due to the brass brackets that affix the backrest to the frame. This design not only creates visual separation but also allows for slight flex in the backrest for added comfort. The curved armrests, slender tapering legs, and finely carved seat rail highlight the high level of craftsmanship and ergonomic detail characteristic of Vodder’s work.
Arne Vodder, a Danish architect and designer, was one of the central figures in the mid-century Scandinavian movement. A student of Finn Juhl, Vodder infused his furniture designs with sculptural sensibility, often combining richly figured woods, high-quality upholstery, and metal fittings. His collaboration with France & Daverkosen produced some of the most elegant and enduring pieces of the 1950s and 1960s.
France & Daverkosen, later renamed France & Søn, played a key role in the global success of Danish design in the mid-20th century. Known for their innovative use of prefabrication and modular construction, the company maintained exceptional build quality and material selection.
This armchair is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age-related wear. The leather shows natural patina and creasing, consistent with its age, while the teak frame remains structurally sound with an even tone and minimal surface wear. The original brass fittings show light oxidation, appropriate for their age.
The dimensions of the chair are 64 cm in width, 56 cm in depth, and 85.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. In imperial units, this translates to approximately 25.2 inches wide, 22 inches deep, 33.7 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
