Information

This is a rare example of model 91, a low stool designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Michael Laursen in Aarhus, Denmark during the 1950s. The design reflects the mid-century Scandinavian commitment to refined simplicity, honest materials, and ergonomic proportions. It’s made for the easy chair with model ML-91.

The stool features a softly curved rectangular seat upholstered in its original light beige wool fabric, which maintains a warm and natural tone with a subtly textured weave. The seat cushion gently slopes at the edges, adding to the overall organic form and comfort. It rests on four slightly tapering round legs crafted in solid rosewood, a richly toned hardwood prized for its durability and expressive grain patterns. The dark wood contrasts elegantly with the lighter wool, accentuating the visual balance of the piece.

The condition is good vintage, with small signs of use that are consistent with age and add authenticity to the piece without compromising its function or aesthetic integrity. The upholstery remains taut and clean, while the rosewood legs retain their original finish with minor wear.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was known for his ability to unite sculptural form with comfort and practicality. He trained at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen and worked for several prominent architects before establishing his own design studio in 1954. Wikkelsø’s work is recognized for its humanistic design ethos, often expressing a balance between organic softness and architectural clarity. Michael Laursen, though a more elusive figure in terms of biographical details, was among the smaller Danish producers during the mid-century period who collaborated with forward-thinking designers to produce high-quality, artisanal furniture.
