Ole Wanscher rocking chair
This rare Senator rocking chair was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by France & Søn in Denmark during the 1960s. The chair exemplifies Wanscher’s blend of architectural precision and organic, flowing forms, characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design.
The frame is crafted from solid teak, featuring warm reddish-brown hues and a fine, straight grain. The sculpted arms and base create a continuous curved silhouette, with the runners seamlessly integrated into the chair’s side profile, emphasizing a unified and minimalist construction. The design skillfully balances visual lightness with structural strength, reflecting Wanscher’s focus on both aesthetics and ergonomic comfort.
The seat and backrest cushions are upholstered in the original brown leather, which has developed a rich patina with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The cushions are arranged in a grid pattern with deep button tufting, maintaining fullness and support while contributing to the chair’s inviting presence.
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985), trained under Kaare Klint, was a prominent figure in Danish modernism, known for merging classical influences with modern functionality. His work is distinguished by refined proportions, subtle detailing, and high-quality materials.
France & Søn was a leading Danish manufacturer during the mid-20th century, celebrated for producing modernist furniture designed by key figures such as Finn Juhl, Grete Jalk, and Wanscher. The company was known for excellent joinery and advanced production techniques.
This Senator rocking chair is in very good original condition, with minor wear to the leather and a well-preserved teak frame. The patina enhances its authenticity without compromising structural integrity or comfort. The chair measures 68 cm wide, 77 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 43 cm, approximately 26.8 inches wide, 30.3 inches deep, 30.3 inches high, and a seat height of 16.9 inches.
