Erik Höglund stool
This sculptural mid-century stool was designed by Erik Höglund and produced by Boda Trä in Sweden during the 1950s. Constructed from solid beech, the piece features an olive green webbing seat, embodying a rustic modernist aesthetic that merges functional woodworking with expressive detailing.
The frame consists of rounded cylindrical legs and stretchers, each corner post finished with turned finial-like terminations. The rear corners are connected by a diagonally braced truss structure, fastened with tensioned rawhide cords. This detail not only reinforces the structure but also serves as a subtle ornamental element characteristic of Höglund’s tactile, handcrafted design approach.
While Erik Höglund is best known for his glasswork with Boda Glasbruk, his furniture and architectural explorations through Boda Trä are rarer. His wooden works are noted for their honest use of materials, visible construction techniques, and robust yet organic proportions. This stool exemplifies his commitment to raw, unpolished materiality combined with playful, almost archaic construction methods.
The stool remains in very good vintage condition, showing age-appropriate patina on both wood and textile components. The beech frame displays minor surface wear and soft rounding at foot contact points, while the hemp straps remain structurally sound with only slight fraying at the edges.
Its dimensions are 60 cm wide, 30 cm deep, and 27 cm high, approximately 23.6 by 11.8 by 10.6 inches.
