Mats Theselius room divider
This very rare folding screen titled “Rörligt objekt” was designed in 1989 by Swedish designer Mats Theselius and produced by Källemo in Sweden. The piece exemplifies Theselius’s unique approach to design, where conceptual rigor meets material experimentation, and where furniture often blurs the line between functional object and sculptural artwork.
The screen is composed of four vertical panels, each crafted from a metal sheet with a distinctive weathered surface finish. The metallic texture shows a patinated character, giving the surface a subdued, aged appearance reminiscent of oxidized steel or industrial zinc. This finish enhances the screen’s raw, tactile aesthetic and reinforces the object’s sculptural quality. The face of each panel is punctuated by a grid of evenly spaced rivets, contributing to a mechanical rhythm and referencing industrial fabrication techniques.
Each panel is joined to the next by narrow, minimalistic hinges that enable flexible articulation. This construction allows the screen to be arranged in a variety of freestanding configurations, serving both as a space divider and a visual statement piece. Despite its rigid materiality, the screen’s function is fluid and adaptable, offering both decorative presence and spatial utility.
Mats Theselius, known for his bold, avant-garde furniture and conceptual pieces, has worked with Källemo since the late 1980s. His work consistently challenges conventional norms in furniture design, often exploring contrasting materials and forms. Källemo, a Swedish producer with a long-standing reputation for innovative and high-quality craftsmanship, has collaborated with several influential designers, and Rörligt objekt stands as one of their most experimental and collectible productions.
Each panel measures 48 cm in width, 2 cm in depth, and 188 cm in height. In imperial units, this translates to approximately 18.9 inches wide, 0.8 inches deep, and 74 inches high. When fully extended, the total length of the screen is 192 cm (approximately 75.6 inches), offering significant visual impact and functional versatility.
