Axel Einar Hjorth bench
This rare bench, model Skoga, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1933. It belongs to Hjorth’s “sportstugemöbler” (weekend cabin furniture) series, which merges traditional Swedish woodworking with a modernist structural language. Created for rural or recreational use, these pieces are now recognized as distinctive examples of early Scandinavian functionalism.
Constructed from solid pine, the bench features a dark stained finish that highlights the expressive vertical grain of the wood, emphasizing its rustic, elemental character. The design is defined by strong geometric lines and visible joinery, with wide vertical side supports notched to receive two horizontal stretchers. The backrest consists of a slightly arched transverse rail, while the seat is made up of two thick planks exhibiting shrinkage cracks, characteristic of natural aging in timber. Assembly employs pegged tenon joints, underscoring its connection to traditional Swedish craftsmanship.
Axel Einar Hjorth was chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. His work ranged from Art Deco opulence to the stripped-down architectural forms seen in the Skoga bench. The sportstugemöbler series represented a stylistic shift toward emphasizing raw pine materiality and hand-crafted qualities, reflecting the functionalist ideals emerging in the 1930s.
The bench measures 210 cm wide, 45.5 cm deep, and 65 cm high, with a seat height of 44 cm (approximately 82.7 x 17.9 x 25.6 inches, seat height 17.3 inches). The condition is good vintage, showing visible wear and heavy patina consistent with age and use. The surface has age-related abrasions, darkening, and oxidation of the finish, especially on the seat planks and joints, all in keeping with its early production and rustic intent. Structurally, the bench remains sound and stable.
