Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model FH-7, was designed by Ernst Heilmann-Sevaldsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1930s. The design represents an early modern Scandinavian approach to bentwood furniture, blending traditional craftsmanship with a progressive sense of form and comfort.

The frames are crafted from solid beech wood, stained to a deep, warm brown. The legs and arms are formed from bentwood components, creating a fluid, continuous structure characterized by a generous curve in the front legs and a subtle sweep through the arms. This sculptural shaping softens the chairs’ visual presence and enhances ergonomic support. The slightly reclined seat and backrest further contribute to a comfortable and relaxed posture.

The backrests consist of horizontal leather straps in a warm cognac color, secured with stitched leather loops that wrap around the vertical frame members. This original leather suspension system shows natural patina, providing structural tension and a rhythmic contrast to the solid wooden frame. The seat and back cushions have been newly reupholstered in a textured off-white bouclé fabric, introducing a tactile contrast while respecting the integrity of the original design.

Ernst Heilmann-Sevaldsen was a lesser-known but innovative Danish designer active in the early 20th century, whose work bridges traditional cabinetmaking and the functionalist aesthetic that later defined Danish design. His collaboration with Fritz Hansen, a leading Danish furniture manufacturer since the 19th century, places this model within a tradition of high craftsmanship and exploration of bentwood techniques.

The chairs are in very good vintage condition. The wood shows minor signs of age and use, the leather straps display a rich patina, and the new upholstery has been professionally done with high-quality fabric.

Dimensions measure 63 cm wide, 85 cm deep, and 85 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm (approximately 24.8 x 33.5 x 33.5 inches, seat height 15.4 inches).
