Børge Mogensen easy chair
This early and rare easy chair was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1949 and handcrafted by the Danish cabinetmaker Erhard Rasmussen. The chair was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition the same year, an important forum for emerging Danish modernism where Mogensen played a formative role. It represents a pivotal early point in Mogensen’s design trajectory, demonstrating his evolving commitment to structure, clarity, and function.
The chair is constructed in a combination of solid oak and molded beech plywood. The organic sculptural backrest, with its striking double cut-out, arches fluidly from the seat in a single sweeping form that merges ergonomics with a distinctly modernist expression. The wide seat and precisely angled legs create a compact yet inviting silhouette, resting lightly while offering structural solidity. The seat and back are subtly curved for support, formed from laminated beech veneer, while the frame components, joinery, and stretchers are executed in solid oak.
The warm reddish-brown tone of the wood has aged beautifully, acquiring a consistent patina throughout. The finish remains original and shows only minor wear, with surfaces gently burnished from decades of careful use. All joinery remains tight and well-preserved, and the chair retains its fully original character.
Dimensions: 54.5 cm wide, 64 cm deep, 71 cm high. Seat height: 36.5 cm (21.3 x 25.2 x 28 in., seat height 14.4 in.)
