Hans Wegner easy chairs
This rare pair of folding easy chairs, model JH512, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s, exemplifies Danish craftsmanship and functional elegance. Introduced in 1949 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, these chairs showcase Wegner’s mastery of combining traditional woodworking with ergonomic innovation.
Constructed from solid oak, the frames feature a warm honey patina that highlights the wood’s natural grain. The dynamic side profiles reveal the clever integration of an X-shaped folding mechanism with arched legs, balancing structural integrity and visual lightness without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. The folding function is seamlessly incorporated, a testament to Wegner’s design ingenuity.
The seat and backrest consist of hand-woven cane, arranged in a symmetrical pattern providing breathable comfort and support. The cane shows vintage wear typical for its age, including minor splits and slight sagging, which add to the chairs’ authenticity. Sculpted open-framed armrests enhance comfort while maintaining the chair’s airy, sculptural form.
Hans J. Wegner’s collaboration with Johannes Hansen was pivotal in defining Danish modern furniture. The JH512 is a notable example of their work, blending form, function, and craftsmanship with enduring style.
