Finn Juhl sofa
The BO55 sofa, designed by Finn Juhl in 1946 and produced by Bovirke in Denmark, represents a significant example of mid-century Scandinavian modern design characterized by organic forms and fine craftsmanship. Its frame is constructed from stained beech wood, a material favored during the period for its durability and warm tone. The legs are gently tapered, elevating the sofa slightly off the ground and lending it an airy, sculptural presence consistent with Juhl’s design philosophy.
The upholstery consists of high-quality wool fabric, featuring a contrast between the light grey wool covering the backrest and armrests and the dark blue wool of the seat cushion. This dual-tone arrangement highlights the sofa’s fluid curves, emphasizing the seamless transition between the back and the armrests. Button-tufted details on the backrest contribute to the upholstery’s dimensionality, maintaining a sophisticated yet restrained aesthetic.
Finn Juhl was a pivotal figure in Danish modernism, renowned for integrating sculptural qualities into functional furniture. His approach diverged from the stricter functionalism of his contemporaries, favoring organic shapes and artistic expression. Juhl’s innovative designs played a crucial role in elevating Danish furniture to international acclaim in the mid-20th century.
The BO55 sofa illustrates Juhl’s talent for balancing form and comfort. Its softly rounded backrest and armrests create an inviting enclosure that supports ergonomic seating without compromising visual lightness. The piece measures 135 cm in width, 76 cm in depth, and 80.5 cm in height (53.1 x 29.9 x 31.7 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches). The condition is excellent, with the reupholstered wool preserving the sofa’s original design intent while enhancing its durability for continued use.
