Finn Juhl sofa
This very rare sofa, model NV-53, was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in Denmark in 1953. The frame is constructed from solid teak, featuring sculpted armrests that exemplify Juhl’s signature organic and fluid design language. Brass fittings connect the armrests to the seat, providing a refined contrast to the warm tones of the wood. The sofa retains its original fabric upholstery, which shows visible wear and is in need of reupholstery.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was a pioneering figure in Danish modernism, known for his sculptural approach to furniture design that departed from the rigid functionalism of his era. His work emphasized fluid, organic shapes that blur the boundaries between furniture and art. The NV-53 model exemplifies his talent for combining aesthetic elegance with ergonomic comfort. Produced by Niels Vodder, a cabinetmaker celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship, this sofa represents the fruitful collaboration between designer and artisan that defined mid-century Danish furniture.
The design features a slightly curved seat and backrest, complemented by floating armrests that lend the sofa a light and airy presence despite its solid construction. The original upholstery was selected to harmonize with the warm teak frame and follows the gentle contours, enhancing the softness of the overall design. The subtly tapered legs contribute to the piece’s stability while maintaining an elegant visual lightness.
Structurally, the sofa remains sound, though the upholstery exhibits wear consistent with age. Its dimensions are 129 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height (approximately 50.8 by 31.5 by 28.3 inches), with a seat height of 39 cm (15.4 inches).
