Axel Einar Hjorth sofa
This rare early example of the Utö model sofa was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden in 1932. Crafted from solid acid-stained pine, the sofa is part of Hjorth’s iconic Sportstugemöbler series, created during the early 1930s to furnish Swedish weekend and summer homes with robust yet architecturally composed furniture. The designs blend vernacular traditions with a modern sensibility.
The sofa features a flat plank seat with thick rounded edges and two semi-circular ends forming low spindle-backed rests. These backrests consist of vertical dowels anchored into a curved top rail, subtly angled to create an embracing silhouette. It stands on four solid conical legs, slightly splayed for stability and balance. The acid-stained pine showcases visible grain and deep tonal variations, highlighting the rustic texture while lending the piece a refined patina. The original seat cushion, included, is upholstered in a checked cotton or linen blend with tufted detailing, providing a soft contrast to the sturdy wooden frame.
Axel Einar Hjorth was the head designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938 and played a pivotal role in defining modern Swedish furniture during the interwar period. While much of his work aligned with international Art Deco and functionalist aesthetics, the Sportstugemöbler line marked a shift toward localized expression, integrating folk craft and practicality with bold modern forms. The Utö model, named after a popular archipelago island south of Stockholm, is among the most recognized designs in the series.
The sofa is in good vintage condition, showing surface marks, small nicks, and wear consistent with age and use. The pine retains a rich finish, and the structure remains stable. The original cushion exhibits natural aging and gentle fading but remains usable.
