Information

This rare example of the “Papa Bear” easy chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark during the 1950s, is a distinguished icon of Scandinavian modernism. The chair features a sculptural frame with the signature wingback design, characterized by its enveloping form and extended armrests that lend the piece its affectionate nickname.

Constructed from solid rosewood, the frame showcases the wood’s rich grain and durability, emphasizing both material quality and craftsmanship. The chair has been newly reupholstered in high-quality Kvadrat™ fabric, selected in a neutral, earthy tone that harmonizes with the warm rosewood. The upholstery features meticulous button tufting that enhances the depth and texture of the soft textile, remaining faithful to Wegner’s original aesthetic.

Hans J. Wegner, a seminal figure in Danish design, is celebrated for his organic functionalism and timeless aesthetic, with a strong emphasis on wood as a primary material. The “Papa Bear” chair, officially known as model AP19, is among his most revered creations, combining comfort with a commanding sculptural presence.

A.P. Stolen, a renowned Danish furniture manufacturer, worked closely with Wegner to realize many of his iconic designs. The company’s reputation for precise craftsmanship and faithful execution of Wegner’s vision is reflected in the quality of this chair.

This piece epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian design, merging ergonomic comfort with organic forms. The tapered legs, slightly reclined backrest, and thoughtfully designed seating position underscore Wegner’s dedication to both beauty and functionality.

The chair measures approximately 91 centimeters in width, 90 centimeters in depth, and 98 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 40 centimeters (35.8 x 35.4 x 38.6 inches, seat height 15.7 inches). It is in excellent condition, featuring well-preserved rosewood elements and recently renewed upholstery that ensures both authenticity and durability.
