Information

This is a rare chaise longue, model JH-524, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1958 and produced by the distinguished Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen.

The frame is constructed from solid oak with a warm honey-toned finish. The silhouette is defined by its long, low-lying form and smoothly curved lines that ergonomically follow the contours of the human body in repose. The sides of the frame are punctuated by rows of knotted cords, supporting a seat of hand-woven rope that maintains both structural integrity and visual lightness. The rear features a chromed steel brace, providing reinforcement to the reclining back while allowing for adjustable tension via a cotton strap. A padded canvas headrest and a natural sheepskin throw are integrated, enhancing the comfort of the chaise while contributing to the tactile experience.

The chair remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of age and wear consistent with careful use. The wood has developed a rich patina, the cord and textile elements are intact, and the metal support exhibits no corrosion or deformation.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most prolific and innovative furniture designers of the 20th century, credited with over 500 chair designs. A central figure in Danish Modernism, Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker before studying architecture. His work reflects an enduring commitment to craftsmanship, comfort, and an understated elegance rooted in both modernist ideals and traditional woodworking.

Johannes Hansen was one of Denmark’s most influential cabinetmakers during the mid-century period, known for his collaborations with pioneering designers like Wegner and Kaare Klint. Hansen’s workshop was a vital platform for the production of experimental and highly crafted modern furniture during the 1940s through the 1960s.

Dimensions are 63.5 cm wide by 170 cm deep by 91 cm high (25 inches x 66.9 inches x 35.8 inches). The seat height is 30 cm (11.8 inches).
