Information

This is a rare set of six armchairs, designed by Danish designer Erik Kirkegaard and produced by Høng Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs are constructed from solid rosewood and have been newly reupholstered in a warm, textured wool fabric in a neutral brown tone. The wood frames display a rich, dark grain typical of rosewood, with refined sculptural details and a gently curved silhouette that harmonizes with the natural feel of the upholstery.

The form is defined by a broad, sweeping backrest with an inward curve, designed to cradle the back, and is supported by tapered vertical struts that continue down to meet the angled rear legs. The seat is slightly concave and padded for comfort, while the upholstered armrests are set into the top of the frame, allowing the grain of the rosewood to remain a prominent visual feature. The armrests are subtly chamfered and showcase pronounced grain variation and a soft luster. The construction is reinforced with stretchers between the legs, enhancing structural stability and emphasizing horizontal lines.

Erik Kirkegaard was active in the mid-century Danish design movement, producing furniture that merges ergonomic function with a distinctly modern aesthetic. His designs for Høng Stolefabrik reflect a clear concern for proportion, comfort, and fine craftsmanship, often incorporating tactile natural materials and sinuous wooden frames. These chairs exemplify Kirkegaard’s ability to blend modernist purity with organic shaping.

The set is presented in good vintage condition following a complete restoration, including new upholstery and carefully refinished frames. Minor traces of earlier use may be visible on the wood, but the structural and visual integrity of the chairs is intact.

Each chair measures 62.5 cm in width, 62 cm in depth, and 83.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 24.6 inches wide, 24.4 inches deep, 32.9 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches. This set represents a particularly elegant and well-preserved example of Scandinavian modernist seating with architectural clarity and fine materials.
