Finn Juhl armchairs
This rare pair of armchairs, model BO-72, was designed by the influential Danish designer Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke in Denmark during the height of the mid-century modern movement. The chairs exemplify Juhl’s distinct approach to furniture design, where sculptural elegance meets ergonomic functionality, and where craftsmanship is celebrated in both form and detail.
Constructed in richly grained teak, the frames of the BO-72 chairs display fluid organic lines, characteristic of Juhl’s work. The armrests extend outward with a subtle, sweeping motion, seamlessly integrated into the overall silhouette. Each transition between components is soft and refined, with no abrupt breaks—demonstrating a commitment to visual continuity and comfort. The teak has matured with age, showing a warm, golden-brown tone and a complex natural grain that enhances the chairs’ visual depth.
The original beige / tan leather upholstery on the seat and backrest remains intact. It has aged gracefully, exhibiting a natural patina and surface creasing consistent with time and use. The leather’s warm, neutral tone provides a pleasing contrast to the darker hues of the teak and maintains the understated sophistication typical of Scandinavian modern interiors. The seat and back cushions are softly contoured, offering a high level of comfort and support, while the overall proportions reflect a careful balance between form and function.
Under each seat, the frame is stamped “Bovirke” confirming the chairs’ provenance. Bovirke was one of the key Danish manufacturers associated with Finn Juhl, producing many of his most iconic models with an emphasis on quality materials and artisanal construction.
Finn Juhl, active from the 1940s through the 1970s, is widely credited with bringing Danish modern design to international prominence. His furniture, often influenced by contemporary art and sculpture, broke away from traditional boxy forms and introduced a freer, more organic expression in furniture design. The BO-72 armchair exemplifies this shift, merging refined woodworking with a sculptural sensibility.
Each chair measures 62 cm in width, 51 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 24.4 inches wide, 20.1 inches deep, and 31.9 inches high, with a seat height of 16.9 inches.
