Niels O. Møller armchair
This armchair, model 57, was designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. It exemplifies refined mid-century Danish craftsmanship, notable for its organic form, structural subtlety, and material honesty.
The frame is constructed from solid teak, featuring a deep, warm tone with fine vertical grain. The sculptural armrests gently curve and seamlessly integrate into the backrest, which is slightly inclined and crafted from a single, softly curved plank of teak designed to provide lumbar support. The legs taper organically, and the structure is assembled using precise joinery techniques characteristic of Danish cabinetmaking of the period.
The seat is upholstered in its original black leather, which remains in good vintage condition, showing minor age-related surface creasing. The leather is tightly stretched across the frame and retains its original tacks underneath, visible from the chair’s underside. The combination of tight upholstery and the thin, curved teak frame imparts both visual lightness and ergonomic comfort.
Niels Otto Møller (1920–1982) was a leading Danish furniture designer of the mid-20th century, recognized for his organic design language and dedication to craftsmanship. He founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944, a company renowned for high-quality solid wood furniture characterized by minimal, timeless aesthetics. The model 57 armchair is among his most celebrated designs, often cited for its understated elegance and structural clarity.
The chair measures 58 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 76 cm high, with a seat height of 44 cm—approximately 22.8 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, 29.9 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
