John Kandell armchairs
This set of twelve armchairs, model “Solitär” was designed by John Kandell and produced by Källemo in Sweden in 1986. The chairs are constructed from solid mahogany with a warm, reddish-brown tone, complemented by leather-upholstered seats in a natural patinated finish. The design features strong geometric lines, with an architectural quality emphasized by the stepped, angular legs and the precisely constructed joinery.
John Kandell was a Swedish architect and designer known for his sculptural approach to furniture. His work often merged functional design with artistic expression, balancing simplicity with structural complexity. The Solitär chair exemplifies his design philosophy, incorporating elements of traditional craftsmanship with a modernist sensibility. Källemo, the Swedish furniture manufacturer, is recognized for its commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and design integrity. Founded in the 1970s, Källemo has collaborated with many leading Scandinavian designers, producing pieces that challenge conventional forms while maintaining a strong emphasis on materiality and durability. The Solitär chair reflects influences from Scandinavian modernism with an emphasis on material honesty and precision in craftsmanship. The chair’s strong, rectilinear form, together with its warm wood tones, aligns with mid-century Scandinavian design principles while also displaying a contemporary sculptural presence.
Each chair measures 60 cm (23.6 inches) in width, 55 cm (21.7 inches) in depth, and 89.5 cm (35.2 inches) in height, with a seat height of 46 cm (18.1 inches). The set remains in good condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. The leather seats have developed a natural patina.
