Torbjørn Afdal dining chairs
This is a rare and highly refined set of six high back dining chairs, model Darby, designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Nesjestranda Møbelfabrik in Norway. The chairs are constructed in solid rosewood, showcasing a deep and vibrant grain pattern characteristic of this exotic hardwood. The frames have a slender yet sturdy architectural quality, with gently tapering legs connected by horizontal stretchers that provide additional stability. The back legs are subtly curved to follow the ergonomic incline of the backrest, giving the chairs a graceful and balanced silhouette.
The seats and backrests are upholstered in original tan leather, which has developed a soft patina over time, adding to their vintage character. The leather shows small signs of usage consistent with age but remains supple and intact, complementing the rich tone of the rosewood. The high backs are slightly reclined, designed to offer comfort during extended sitting, making them well-suited for dining environments. The joinery and detailing are precise, typical of Norwegian mid-century craftsmanship.
Produced in the 1960s, these chairs represent Torbjørn Afdal’s dedication to functional elegance and Scandinavian modernism. Their minimalistic yet warm aesthetic bridges traditional woodworking techniques with modern design principles, resulting in timeless pieces that work equally well in classic and contemporary interiors.
