Frits Henningsen cabinet
This rare freestanding cabinet was both designed and produced by the esteemed Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in the 1950s. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the cabinet is distinguished by its elegant combination of fine materials and exquisite craftsmanship. The black leather-clad writing surface adds a sophisticated contrast, enhancing the piece’s functional beauty.
The cabinet’s rectangular form stands on slender, slightly tapered legs, connected by horizontal stretchers that provide structural stability. The front comprises four drawers with integrated, minimalist handles, maintaining clean, precise lines throughout the design. The top drawer is lockable, equipped with brass fittings and accompanied by a key, emphasizing security alongside elegance. The fully finished back allows the cabinet to be placed freely within a room without compromising its refined appearance.
Frits Henningsen was a renowned Danish designer and cabinetmaker noted for his dedication to handcrafted quality. Distinctively, he personally oversaw both design and production, ensuring superior workmanship without relying on external manufacturers—a testament to the piece’s high-quality provenance.
Measuring 72 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 117 cm in height at the back (28.3 x 21.7 x 46 inches), with the writing surface at 112 cm (44 inches) high, the cabinet remains in well-preserved condition. It features a natural patina on the rosewood and leather, with minor wear consistent with its age, underscoring its authentic vintage character and enduring appeal.
