Hans Wegner sideboard
This rare sideboard, model RY-25, also known as the “President” was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1959 and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark. The cabinet showcases Wegner’s mastery of materials and his commitment to functional yet refined design.
Constructed from highly figured Brazilian rosewood, the sideboard exhibits rich tonal variation and a vertical grain pattern that runs across the front and sides, highlighting the beauty of this exotic wood. Over time, the surface has developed a deep patina with only minimal signs of age, retaining its excellent vintage condition. The front of the sideboard features a pair of sliding doors, each fitted with recessed handles made from rosewood and metal. These handles are mounted on square brushed aluminum plates, demonstrating Wegner’s meticulous attention to detail and his skillful use of material contrast.
The interior of the sideboard is crafted from solid and veneered oak, which imparts a warm, golden tone to the interior spaces. The cabinet is divided into three sections: adjustable shelving on both sides, and a central bank of five shallow drawers, ideal for storing documents or flatware. This thoughtful organization provides both storage capacity and visual harmony. The carcass of the sideboard rests on square chromed steel legs, with rosewood feet, adding a refined structural element that visually elevates the piece while maintaining grounded proportions.
Hans Wegner (1914–2007), a pivotal figure in Danish modernism, is best known for his extensive work in chair design. However, his contributions to cabinetry, though less numerous, are equally significant. The RY-25 is among Wegner’s more luxurious case pieces, blending exotic woods with modern materials, reflecting the evolving design language of mid-century Denmark. Produced by Ry Møbler, a company renowned for its high-quality execution of Wegner’s designs, this piece remains a testament to both craftsmanship and innovative design.
The dimensions of the sideboard are 200 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height (78.7 x 19.3 x 31.1 inches).
