Sigurd Resell coffee table
This rare model “Falcon” coffee table was designed by Sigurd Resell and produced by Vatne Møbler in Norway during the 1970s. The table features a round clear glass top supported by a sculptural base made of chromed steel. The base is constructed from four curved steel supports that converge at a central vertical axis, connected by exposed bolts. Each arm extends outward and upward, terminating in a small upturned lip designed to secure the glass top in place.
The form of the base suggests a dynamic, tripod-like stance despite having four splayed feet arranged at equal intervals. The design is both minimal and mechanically expressive, with visible fasteners highlighting the engineered nature of the piece. The chromed steel surface is bright and reflective, exhibiting minor wear and patina consistent with age and use. The beveled glass top remains in good condition, showing only minor surface scratches.
Sigurd Resell (1920–2010) was a Norwegian designer noted for his functionalist approach and for blending modernist aesthetics with industrial production techniques. He gained recognition through his work with Vatne Møbler, especially the Falcon chair series, which shares a similar visual language and structural concept with this table.
This coffee table is firmly rooted in the postwar Scandinavian modernist tradition but also reveals influences from the international high-tech and minimalist design movements of the 1970s. It exemplifies Resell’s talent for merging sculptural form with industrial materials.
The table measures 105 cm in diameter and 48 cm in height (approximately 41.3 by 18.9 inches). It is structurally sound and retains all original components, maintaining its visually striking presence.
