Torbjørn Afdal dining table
This very rare dining table was designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Nesjestranda Møbelfabrik in Norway during the 1960s. Crafted from rosewood, the table showcases the rich, warm tones and striking grain patterns characteristic of this highly valued hardwood. The oval tabletop features a book-matched veneer, highlighting the organic flow of the wood grain, while subtly rounded edges lend a refined finish.
The table includes an extension mechanism that allows it to adjust from 210 cm (82.7 inches) to a maximum length of 410 cm (161.4 inches), accommodating larger seating arrangements. The extension leaves integrate seamlessly with the main surface, preserving the continuity of the wood grain. When fully extended, a central support leg is added to ensure stability.
Torbjørn Afdal’s design philosophy combines functional elegance with minimalistic aesthetics and precise construction, rooted firmly in the Scandinavian modern tradition. This is reflected in the use of natural materials, clean lines, and exceptional craftsmanship. Nesjestranda Møbelfabrik was renowned for producing high-quality Norwegian furniture and collaborating with leading designers of the period.
The table rests on four slender, tapered legs that contribute to its light and balanced visual presence. The rosewood frame and legs maintain consistent elegance, enhancing the natural beauty of the material. The finish is well preserved, showing minor signs of use typical for its age.
The table measures 210 cm in length, extendable to 410 cm (82.7 to 161.4 inches), 120 cm in width (47.2 inches), and 73.5 cm in height (28.9 inches), combining versatility with timeless Scandinavian design.
