Floor lamp
This rare Art Deco floor lamp is constructed in brass with a fabric lampshade and a sculptural cast base. The shaft is elegantly arched, allowing the light to project downward in a soft, sweeping curve. Its silhouette is characterized by the contrast between the slender brass tube and the weighty circular base. The base is executed in dark patinated metal with relief figures of antelopes in motion, adding a decorative sculptural element typical of the Art Deco period. The lampshade is a newly made replacement in white textile, stretched over a wire frame that creates vertical segmentation and a diffused, even glow when illuminated.
The lamp exemplifies the aesthetic tendencies of the Art Deco era, combining stylized animal motifs with a refined and functional form. The leaping antelope figures on the base reflect the fascination with speed, movement, and exoticism that was prominent in decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s. Brass was frequently used in lighting of this period, both for its warm golden tone and its ability to be shaped into curved forms that accentuate modern lines. The original design of the lamp speaks to the transitional moment between decorative expressiveness and modernist simplicity.
Condition is excellent, with a well-preserved brass structure showing light patina consistent with age. The base maintains its sculptural clarity, with surface texture and details intact. The newly produced fabric shade has been crafted in accordance with the original style, ensuring the lamp retains its intended character while offering renewed functionality.
The piece represents a balance of decorative art and utility, characteristic of the Art Deco movement, where lighting often served as both a functional object and a sculptural statement. Its graceful form and symbolic base make it a noteworthy example of early 20th-century European decorative lighting design.
