Information

This ceiling lamp, model “Nordlys” was designed by Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark in 1963. It encapsulates key traits of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, including geometric clarity, a thoughtful selection of natural materials, and an emphasis on diffused ambient lighting. The design combines teak, brass, and opaline glass, balancing industrial and organic elements—a hallmark of Hammerborg’s work during his tenure as head of design at Fog & Mørup.

The lamp’s structure is composed of vertical and horizontal brass rods, with a horizontal teak spine intersecting the composition, creating a harmonious balance. Eight opaline glass cylinder shades are attached to the brass rods, each seated in a brass socket featuring finely cut vertical slots. These slots diffuse the light subtly at the base of each shade, while the opaline glass provides a soft, even glow when illuminated. The conical brass ceiling canopy and central suspension rod complete the vertical axis of the lamp, further enhancing its architectural form.

The lamp measures 63 cm in width (approximately 24.8 inches), 35 cm in depth (approximately 13.8 inches), and 68 cm in height (approximately 26.8 inches). The overall condition is very good, with visible natural patina on the brass components and minor wear on the wood and glass, consistent with age. The opaline glass shades remain intact, displaying a uniform finish and providing warm, ambient light when in use.

Jo Hammerborg was a pivotal figure in Danish lighting design, known for introducing sculptural refinement and technical precision to everyday lighting objects. His designs for Fog & Mørup helped redefine the Danish lighting industry in the 1960s. The “Nordlys” model is a testament to his ability to merge modernist geometry with materials that age gracefully, standing out for its proportional clarity and ambient lighting quality. This piece is a distinguished example of Scandinavian lighting design from the period, combining functionality and visual appeal in equal measure.
