Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 9007/8, was designed by Finnish lighting pioneer Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The chandelier is constructed of brass and features eight original opaline glass shades shaped in a flared, trumpet-like form. Its overall design presents balanced symmetry, with slender, upward-curving arms radiating elegantly from a central stem. This design exemplifies Tynell’s refined mid-century style, which masterfully combines craftsmanship with delicate organic motifs.
The brass framework has developed a warm, aged patina with subtle variations and oxidation consistent with its vintage character. Wrapped wire details accentuate the central stem and base, reinforcing the handmade quality of the piece. The opaline glass shades possess a soft ivory tone that diffuses light gently, creating ambient illumination. Each shade is mounted on a conical brass holder attached by gracefully curved arms, evoking the lightness and naturalism of flower stems.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973), a co-founder of Taito Oy and later lead designer for Idman, is a seminal figure in Finnish lighting design. His body of work spans from the 1930s through the 1950s and is characterized by an interplay of perforated metal, naturalistic forms, and meticulous material selection, balancing functional requirements with aesthetic elegance.
This lamp is firmly rooted in the Scandinavian modernist tradition, emphasizing simplicity, elegance, and a tactile material presence. It is in good vintage condition with original components and minor age-related wear, including a light surface patina and slight wear on the brass finish.
The dimensions are 55.5 cm in diameter and 58 cm in height, approximately 21.9 by 22.8 inches.
