Information

This rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp, model J1979, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp combines a yellow lacquered metal shade with brass detailing, illustrating Tynell’s distinct ability to merge function and ornamentation into elegant lighting designs.

The form consists of a gently tapered, conical shade that features a pattern of small perforations across its surface, characteristic of Tynell’s work, allowing for a decorative light effect when illuminated. The surface is finished in a soft yellow lacquer, and the shade is complemented by a brass top and a counterweight system, also in brass, which enables the height of the lamp to be adjusted. The brass elements have developed a natural patina over time, and the lacquered metal shade shows minor surface wear consistent with age and use, preserving the authentic vintage character of the piece.
