Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
Model 9068, also known as the “Starry Sky” ceiling lamp or flush mount, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. This rare lighting fixture exemplifies Tynell’s distinctive approach to atmospheric lighting and refined materiality. The form is defined by a shallow, circular black lacquered metal body, subtly domed and perforated with a series of small, precisely arranged holes. These perforations serve both a decorative and functional purpose, diffusing the light outward in soft, celestial patterns that evoke the visual impression of a star-filled night sky.
Internally, the lamp features a brass grid that acts as a secondary diffuser, filtering the light to produce a warm, ambient glow. This combination of lacquered metal and brass—one dark and understated, the other luminous and tactile—is characteristic of Tynell’s mid-century work, where utilitarian fixtures are elevated through poetic design and material harmony.
Produced by Taito Oy, the premier Finnish lighting manufacturer during the mid-20th century, model 9068 reflects the collaborative era when Tynell was deeply involved in shaping Finland’s lighting identity for both public and private interiors. The lamp remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear and patina consistent with careful preservation. It retains its original structural components and surface finishes, exemplifying the designer’s mastery of light manipulation and quiet ornamentation.
