Information

This very rare and early ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The lamp features a striking combination of black lacquered metal, brass, and glass. The upper section is a black metal cone decorated with evenly spaced spherical brass studs, creating a sculptural and decorative effect that adds visual interest. The main shade is a wide, shallow dome made of slightly yellow-tinted opal glass, which diffuses light softly and evenly. Below the glass shade, a brass framework with gracefully curved elements secures the glass in place while contributing to the lamp’s elegant and refined appearance.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish designer and master craftsman celebrated for his pioneering contributions to lighting design. As a co-founder of Taito Oy, he played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic and technical development of Scandinavian modern lighting. The company significantly influenced Finland’s modern design movement, with its lamps adorning numerous public buildings, hotels, and private residences.

This lamp embodies the key principles of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, with clean lines, contrasting materials, and carefully executed details. It reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic ingenuity characteristic of Tynell’s oeuvre.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing minor wear typical for its age on the brass and lacquered surfaces.

Its dimensions are approximately 45 cm (17.7 inches) in diameter and 48 cm (18.9 inches) in height.
