Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This very rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp features a spun brass shade with a gently flaring, conical profile, distinguished by a perforated surface. The punched holes create a patterned diffusion of light when illuminated, a hallmark of Tynell’s work that combines decorative appeal with functional lighting.
Beneath the shade, a glass reflector disc is secured by a small brass finial, providing soft, even downward illumination. The lower rim of the shade is accented with scalloped cut-outs, adding visual rhythm and delicate detailing. The lamp’s height adjustability is facilitated by a visible counterweight mechanism made of solid brass. This pulley and cable system is housed within the ceiling canopy and controlled externally by a suspended brass weight, merging technical function with sculptural balance.
Constructed primarily from solid brass, the lamp has developed a warm patina over time. The lighting unit has been fully restored with new electrical wiring and fittings, while all original structural components remain intact. The Taito Oy manufacturer’s mark is stamped inside, confirming the lamp’s authenticity.
Paavo Tynell was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, known for integrating handcrafted details and natural motifs into his designs. His collaboration with Taito Oy produced some of the most refined and innovative Nordic lighting of the mid-20th century. Tynell’s work is characterized by a fusion of elegance, craftsmanship, and technical ingenuity.
This example is in good vintage condition, showing minor wear including surface marks and age-related patina on the brass. It has been professionally rewired for modern use, preserving both its functional and aesthetic qualities. The lamp measures 35 cm in diameter with an adjustable height ranging from 110 to 135 cm, approximately 13.8 inches in diameter with a variable hanging length between 43.3 and 53.1 inches.
