Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This rare pair of ceiling lamps, model 9067, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito in Finland during the 1940s. Crafted from brass and lacquered metal, these fixtures showcase Tynell’s characteristic blend of refined materials and intricate detailing. Each lamp features a cylindrical cream-colored metal shade with a slightly tapered form, adorned with precise perforations along the lower edge. The inner brass components are partially visible through these openings, creating depth and visual contrast within the design.
Paavo Tynell was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer renowned for his delicate craftsmanship and ability to evoke warmth through metalwork. As a co-founder of Taito Oy, he played a vital role in defining Scandinavian lighting aesthetics throughout the mid-century period. His designs frequently employed perforated metal, brass detailing, and subtle diffusion techniques to produce atmospheric lighting effects. Tynell’s work continues to be highly sought after for its timeless elegance and exceptional quality.
These flush mount lamps exemplify mid-century Scandinavian modern style, where functionality and decorative expression coexist harmoniously. The perforations in the shades allow soft ambient light to filter gently into the surrounding space, enhancing the atmosphere. The use of brass combined with lacquered metal highlights the era’s focus on premium materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
Each lamp measures approximately 16 cm in diameter (6.3 inches) and 32 cm in height (12.6 inches). The lamps show signs of age, including wear on the lacquered surfaces and patina on the brass, consistent with their vintage character.
