Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps

These very rare and large ceiling lamps, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s, are outstanding examples of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Characterized by a refined balance of material elegance and atmospheric functionality, they showcase Tynell’s signature ability to merge utilitarian purpose with decorative finesse.

Each lamp features a substantial cylindrical form, measuring 55 cm in diameter and an impressive 110 cm in height. The frame is crafted in brass, which has developed a rich, natural patina over time, lending the piece a warm, golden tone. The surface of the brass often includes delicate perforations or ornamental motifs—such as stylized stars, floral shapes, or geometric patterns—that subtly reference nature or decorative art traditions. These details are understated yet precise, adding dimension to the surface and creating a visually dynamic interplay of light and shadow when the lamp is illuminated.

The lower section of the fixture includes a frosted glass diffuser, positioned to soften and distribute the light evenly across a space. This diffused light is enhanced by the reflective inner surfaces of the brass structure, creating a warm, ambient glow that embodies Tynell’s philosophy of lighting as both functional and atmospheric.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a central figure in 20th-century Finnish design, known for his work with Taito and later Idman, and for his collaborations with prominent architects including Alvar Aalto. His lighting designs are characterized by meticulous craftsmanship, the use of high-quality materials, and an unmistakable elegance that continues to influence lighting design today.
