Ceiling lamp
This is a mid-century ceiling lamp produced in Sweden during the 1950s, showcasing the Scandinavian approach to material experimentation and restrained form. The lamp features an ovoid shade made from sprayed plastic resin, shaped and finished to emulate traditional Japanese washi paper lanterns, offering a soft and diffused light quality. The surface of the shade is structured with thin horizontal and vertical lines, indicating the underlying support frame and reinforcing the geometric integrity of the form. The shade is cream-toned with subtle variations and translucency, and is suspended between two cylindrical black-lacquered metal end caps that provide visual grounding and structural termination at the top and bottom.
The lamp hangs from a twisted fabric cord and mounts to the ceiling with a white canopy. The use of sprayed resin was an innovative solution in postwar Scandinavia, enabling lightweight construction while maintaining a warm, organic appearance, often seen as a response to both material scarcity and the growing interest in Japanese aesthetics during this period.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of usage including minor surface irregularities and aging to the material, consistent with its age. It retains its original components and presents well both lit and unlit, producing a warm ambient glow that accentuates the tactile qualities of the shade.
The lamp measures 31 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height, with an overall drop height of 92 cm, which corresponds approximately to 12.2 inches in diameter, 15.7 inches in height, and 36.2 inches in total hanging length.
