Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamp
The rare and large ceiling lamp model T-58/8, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced in the 1960s by his namesake firm in Markaryd, Sweden, is a remarkable example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting at its most refined and architectural. Jakobsson, known for his deep understanding of light diffusion and atmosphere, brings these qualities to full expression in this grand chandelier.
This model features a two-tiered brass frame supporting a total of eight opaline glass shades, each elegantly rounded to softly diffuse light and create a warm, even illumination. The opaline glass tones down the direct brightness of bulbs, resulting in an ambient glow that is central to Jakobsson’s lighting philosophy. The symmetrical arrangement—four shades on each tier—adds to the visual rhythm and balanced proportions of the fixture.
The brass structure is crafted with minimalist precision, allowing the natural beauty of the material to shine through. Over time, the brass develops a rich patina, giving the chandelier character and depth, and highlighting the passage of time—a quality often celebrated in Scandinavian design. The stem is slender and unobtrusive, maintaining a clean vertical profile while supporting the lamp’s generous overall length.
At 50 cm in diameter (approximately 19.7 inches) and a striking 155 cm in height (approximately 61 inches), the chandelier has a commanding presence, ideal for interiors with higher ceilings. It serves as both a functional source of light and a sculptural focal point, making it particularly suited for dining rooms, open-plan living spaces, or large entryways.
Fitted with E27 sockets, the fixture is compatible with a range of bulb styles and light temperatures, allowing for customization to suit both vintage and contemporary interiors.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was one of the foremost Swedish lighting designers of the 20th century, widely recognized for his work in brass, glass, and wood veneer, and for his dedication to creating atmospheric, glare-free light. The T-58/8 model is a significant representation of his larger-scale ceiling fixtures and reflects the functional elegance and craftsmanship that define his legacy.
This chandelier is not only a beautiful lighting solution but also a collector-worthy statement piece in the history of Scandinavian design.
