Information

This is a rare and finely crafted pair of floor lamps designed by Anders Pehrson and produced in the 1960s by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. Executed in a combination of brass and stitched leather, the lamps exemplify mid-century Scandinavian lighting design with their restrained material palette, clear geometry, and tactile richness.

Each lamp features a cylindrical brass base with a brushed, matte surface finish, supporting a vertical stem wrapped in light tan leather. The leather wrap is tightly stitched along the rear edge and has developed a warm patina over time, subtly softening the brass’s metallic luster while adding visual and material contrast. The seamless transition from the leather-clad shaft to the brass socket housing emphasizes the continuity and coherence of the overall design.

The upper assembly includes a brass fixture, stamped with technical information and marked “Ateljé Lyktan, Åhus, Sweden” alongside the model designation “588 G”. This confirms the authenticity and origin of the lamps. The original cylindrical fabric lampshades in a neutral parchment tone gently diffuse light, retaining the period-appropriate aesthetic. However, they are removable and could be replaced if desired.

When illuminated, the lamps cast a warm, atmospheric glow through the fibrous texture of the shades, creating a soft ambient light ideal for residential or hospitality settings. The combination of brass and leather—both natural, aging materials—contributes to the lamps’ evolving character and timeless appeal.

Anders Pehrson, a notable figure in postwar Swedish lighting design, served as creative director at Ateljé Lyktan, where he introduced modern forms with a distinct focus on function and craftsmanship. Under his direction, the company produced many now-iconic designs that bridged architectural utility with domestic warmth.

The dimensions of each lamp are 146 cm in height and 35.5 cm in diameter (approximately 57.5 x 14 inches). This pair represents an elegant expression of mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics, offering understated sophistication through fine materials and careful execution.
