Hans Bergström floor lamp
This very rare floor lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden, is a distinguished example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Characterized by its refined material palette and sculptural composition, the lamp reflects Bergström’s ability to unite functional elegance with expressive form.
The lamp combines brass and mahogany in a visually balanced and structurally cohesive configuration. A slender brass stem rises from the base, seamlessly integrating with the central wooden body. The mahogany element is carefully shaped, featuring an organic cutout that introduces negative space and adds visual lightness to the solid wood. The tone of the mahogany is warm and rich, displaying a smooth finish that accentuates the natural grain patterns.
Atop the stem sits the original pleated lampshade, which is preserved in excellent condition. The shade’s gently flared form and finely pleated fabric serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, diffusing the light to create a soft, ambient glow. The texture of the pleated surface interacts subtly with light, enhancing the lamp’s decorative presence without overpowering its clean silhouette.
The brass components, including the base and stem, exhibit a natural patina developed over time. This aged finish adds depth and character, underscoring the lamp’s vintage authenticity. The base is marked with ASEA, confirming its provenance from one of Sweden’s most respected lighting manufacturers of the 20th century.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design, co-founding the lighting company Ateljé Lyktan and designing for several prominent manufacturers including ASEA. His work is celebrated for its elegant use of form and material, and for contributing to the development of modern Scandinavian interiors.
This lamp is in very good vintage condition, with only minor wear consistent with age. All components remain original and well-preserved, making it a valuable example of Bergström’s work.
