Hans Bergström (1910 -1996) was born on August 28, 1910, in Karlshamn, Sweden. He became one of Sweden's most influential lighting designers during the mid-20th century. After completing his early education, Bergström pursued formal training at the prestigious Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm, where he refined his skills in design and craftsmanship.
In 1934, Bergström co-founded the lighting company Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The company would become a cornerstone of Scandinavian lighting design, known for blending functionality with a strong sense of form, in keeping with the modernist ideals of the time.
Throughout his career, Bergström played a significant role in shaping Swedish lighting design. His work emphasized functionality, clean lines, and high-quality craftsmanship, hallmarks of Scandinavian modernism. He believed that light should be adaptable and integrated seamlessly into everyday life. Bergström designed lighting solutions for homes, workplaces, and public buildings, often combining materials such as brass, wood, and fabric shades. His lamps reflected a delicate balance of organic forms inspired by nature and modernist simplicity, making them both practical and visually elegant.
Bergström’s work was featured in major exhibitions in Sweden and abroad. He contributed to the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, a pivotal event that established the functionalist principles of Scandinavian design. His designs were also presented at the Milan Triennale, where Nordic design was gaining international recognition. Today, Bergström’s creations can be found in museums such as the Swedish National Museum and Nordiska Museet, highlighting his enduring legacy.
