Josef Frank floor lamp
This rare height-adjustable floor lamp was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s. Crafted from solid brass, the lamp exhibits a naturally aged surface marked by a soft patina and visible oxidation consistent with its age. It retains its original pleated off-white textile lampshade, shaped as a wide truncated cone that evenly diffuses light. Dual pull-chain switches located beneath the shade add both functional convenience and decorative detail.
The lamp’s structure comprises a cylindrical vertical shaft supporting a gracefully curved brass arm that ends in the light fixture. The upper section is height-adjustable, secured by a knurled brass screw, allowing the light source to be positioned flexibly. Stability is provided by a wide, flat brass disc base elevated on small spherical feet, which also contributes to a sense of visual lightness. The lower circuit switch is mounted on the base and retains its original ivory-colored plastic cap.
Josef Frank (1885–1967), an Austrian-born architect and designer, played a pivotal role in the development of modern Scandinavian design. After relocating to Sweden in the 1930s, he became a key figure at Svenskt Tenn, where his humanistic and eclectic modernism contrasted with the prevailing strict functionalism of the era. Frank’s lighting designs are known for combining practicality with expressive, organic forms and meticulous craftsmanship.
This lamp exemplifies Frank’s philosophy through its elegant curves, functional adaptability, and high-quality materials. It represents the early Swedish modernist period and the transition from classical influences toward a softer, more approachable interpretation of modern design.
The lamp measures 150 cm in height, 80 cm in depth, and 52 cm in width (approximately 59 by 31.5 by 20.5 inches). It is in good condition, showing age-appropriate wear on the brass surface. The lampshade remains intact and structurally sound, with only minor discoloration.
