Tapio Wirkkala floor lamps
This rare pair of floor lamps, model K10-11 Crane, was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamps combine white lacquered metal and brass, reflecting a harmonious blend of industrial precision and sculptural elegance. Each lamp features an adjustable conical shade with perforated detailing near the top, allowing light to diffuse subtly and softly. The shades are mounted on articulated brass arms, counterbalanced by spherical brass weights that enable precise adjustment of both height and angle for optimal lighting direction.
Tapio Wirkkala was a multidisciplinary Finnish designer whose work spanned glass, furniture, and industrial design. His lighting designs for Idman exemplify his minimalist approach and functional elegance, often characterized by refined geometric forms and the use of high-quality materials. The K10-11 Crane model perfectly captures Wirkkala’s modernist philosophy, emphasizing adaptability and visual balance while maintaining a restrained aesthetic.
The base of each lamp is a white lacquered metal cone, providing both stability and a light visual footprint. The combination of brass and lacquered metal is typical of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, which valued simplicity, integrity of materials, and practical function. The counterweight system allows for smooth and effortless adjustment, making these lamps particularly well suited for reading or task lighting.
Each lamp measures approximately 17.5 cm in width (6.9 inches), 80 cm in depth (31.5 inches), and 130 cm in height (51.2 inches). The condition reflects natural patina on the brass components and minor wear on the lacquered surfaces, consistent with vintage use.
