Hans-Agne Jakobsson wall lamps

This rare pair of wall lamps, model V-155, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his namesake company in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamps date from the mid-20th century and are exemplary of Jakobsson’s distinctive approach to soft, atmospheric lighting and sculptural form within the context of Scandinavian modernism.

Each lamp is constructed from a series of horizontal brass bands arranged in a layered, curved composition. The bands are slightly offset to allow light to diffuse gently through the gaps, producing an indirect and ambient illumination. This technique reduces glare and emphasizes warmth, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere in the surrounding space. The layered configuration also gives the lamps a volumetric and architectural quality, reinforcing their dual role as both functional lighting and decorative objects.

The polished brass surface has developed a natural patina over time, with subtle tonal variations and surface wear that enhance the visual depth and historical character of the pieces. The brass bands exhibit soft curvature and precise alignment, reflecting the high standards of craftsmanship typical of Jakobsson’s production.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson, active from the 1950s through the 1970s, was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers. He was known for his experimental use of materials and his focus on creating subdued, indirect lighting that contributes to a room’s overall atmosphere. His firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, was based in Markaryd and became internationally recognized for its wide array of innovative and decorative lighting solutions.

The dimensions of each lamp are 17 cm in height, 16.5 cm in depth (projection from wall), and 28 cm in width. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 6.7 inches high, 6.5 inches deep, and 11 inches wide.
