Information

This rare Scandinavian ceramic vase from the 1950s is notable for its sculptural form and rich glaze treatment. The vase features a softly rounded square body that expands outward from a flat base and gently tapers upward into four raised necks, each terminating in a small square-lipped opening. Its design suggests functionality as a flower frog or multi-stem bud vase, allowing multiple flowers to be arranged separately.

The surface is adorned with a richly variegated glaze that combines deep cobalt blue, forest green, celadon, cream, and black tones. The glaze creates a fluid, marbled pattern that flows organically across the rounded form, emphasizing its volume and imparting a painterly, mineral-like quality. Variations in the gloss reveal the kiln firing’s dynamic effects, adding tactile depth and visual complexity.

Though the designer and producer remain unidentified, the vase’s form and glaze are consistent with Scandinavian studio pottery of the 1950s, particularly from smaller Swedish or Danish workshops. The biomorphic shape and expressive glazing reflect the era’s interest in blending natural inspiration with abstract, handcrafted aesthetics.

The vase is in very good vintage condition, showing minor glaze wear appropriate to its age. There are no visible cracks or repairs.

Dimensions measure 18 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 10.5 cm high (approximately 7.1 x 7.1 x 4.1 inches).
