Information

This cylindrical pewter jar, produced in 1933 by Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB) in Sweden, exemplifies early 20th-century Scandinavian metalwork with its minimal and geometric form. The body is composed of a vertically oriented cylinder, finely decorated with evenly spaced horizontal incised lines across its upper section. The lower band remains unornamented, establishing a balanced compositional contrast. The lid fits flush with the rim and is topped with a prominent spherical finial, providing both functional grip and a visual counterpoint to the container’s linear geometry.

The pewter exhibits a subdued, matte silver-grey tone characteristic of the alloy, with a soft sheen and subtle textural variations from hand finishing. The surface remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of usage, such as faint scuffs and hairline abrasions consistent with careful handling over time.

The underside is clearly stamped with the GAB manufacturer’s mark, including the hallmark for 1933 and the Swedish word “SVENSK VARA” indicating its national origin. Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, founded in 1867 and later known as Gense, was a key Swedish producer of silver and pewter household goods and a pioneer in industrial and functionalist design throughout the early to mid-20th century. Their work is associated with quality craftsmanship and a restrained decorative language, in keeping with Scandinavian modernist principles.

The dimensions are 10.5 cm in diameter and 13.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 4.1 inches in diameter and 5.3 inches in height.
