Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlesticks
This rare set of three candlesticks was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. Each candlestick features a slender brass stem that supports a spherical red glass globe serving as a wind shield and soft light diffuser. The set includes three graduated heights, measuring 27 cm, 31 cm, and 43 cm, with each base measuring 14 cm in diameter (approximately 10.6, 12.2, and 16.9 inches high; 5.5 inches diameter). The circular bases are weighted for stability and crafted from polished brass, exhibiting a patina consistent with their vintage.
The design balances formal minimalism with atmospheric expression. The red glass globes produce a warm, glowing effect when lit, while the brass elements contribute refinement and vertical elegance. The construction is modular, allowing the glass globes to be removed for access to the candleholders beneath, which are fixed into recessed brass collars, illustrating thoughtful functional design.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was celebrated for his experimental approach to lighting design, frequently employing color and layered materials to manipulate light emotionally. While best known for his electric lighting, Jakobsson’s candleholders for Liljeholmens Stearinljus, as noted on the base label, represent a significant part of his early work. Produced in his Markaryd workshop, these pieces blend industrial clarity with sensual, atmospheric qualities. The set retains its original manufacturer’s label beneath one base, confirming its production and model information.
This set exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century modernism through clean lines, material honesty, and an emphasis on light as a spatial and sensory experience. The candlesticks function equally well as practical holders or sculptural decorative objects, suited for both modern and period interiors.
The condition is very good, with light wear and patina on the brass and minimal signs of use on the glass globes. There are no chips or cracks, and the original paper label remains intact.
